Sarasota County
Artificial Reef Program
Sarasota County, Florida, is blessed with a very active artificial
reef program. New additions and new reefs are constantly being
created. Some of the more popular reefs for diving include M-10
which is a barge wreck. M-10 has a couple of resident Jewfish
in the 300 pound size. Quite often the visibility is reduced when
huge schools of small bait fish swim over the wreck. Amberjack
to 100 pound size frequent this location in great numbers. Another
of the more popular diving reefs is M-9. On M-9, the reef program
recently ( July 1995 ) placed 5 Vietnam War era US Army tanks
on the reef. It is quite interesting to see a tank other than
a SCUBA tank while underwater.
FDU offers dive charters to the artificial reefs of Sarasota
