We now have a ritual of enjoying a cheeseburger (or two) before and after heading overseas and plan to return to the Laguna Niguel Ritz-Carlton to celebrate our 10th anniversary. 101 Hamburger Stand, Willis, CA USA This old-fashioned hamburger stand doesn't have a rest room, no indoor seating, no waitress. Just a window to order and another to pick up. Each cheeseburger is cooked to order. You watch them cook it on the grill. Add mushroom, bacon or anything else that's fattening to it. This is one of the last places I know where they wrap it in wax paper, then in a napkin, then put it in a sack piping hot. And by the time you open the sack, the juices have dripped through it all. Sink your teeth in and good luck. You have trouble getting your mouth around it--and the ample meat patty slips out the back side, no matter which side you attack it from. If you're driving into the redwoods north of San Francisco (about 2 hrs, 20 minutes), don't miss the 101.

Roach Coach, Concord, CA   USA     Every morning the "roach coach" "restaraunt on wheels" pulled up to the job site. The Vietnamese refugees within had a grille and deep fat fryer. They made the BEST bacon cheeseburger in the entire world!!!! None I've tried elsewhere match the yumminess of their product. Interestingly, there was always a subtle touch of "Chinese food taste" in their burgers. Very subtle, but detectable. Unique. Tasty. The absolute very best burger made by man (or woman).

Louie's Lunch, New Haven, CT USA    credited with serving the first hamburger in the world (or at least on American soil) is a New Haven landmark at its "new" location on Crown Street. Originally located in it's postage stamp sized HQ, maybe 300 sq fteet at the most, on Temple and Crown, people line up every day for the infamous "Cheese Works". The Cheese Works is a delictable 4-5 oz burger, hand shaped and flame broiled on both sides simultaneously, slathered with cheese, a think slice of bermuda onion and slice of tomato. There's nothing like popping in to their new 400 sq foot palace and knocking down 2 cheese works, coke and fries in about 6 minutes. A favorite place for Yale students, Louie's has been immortalized in the famous "Whippenpoof" song which opens "From the tables down at Mory's, to the place where Louie dwells....." No trip to New Haven or New England for that matter, is complete without a Louie's Cheese Works. Now that's eatin'  FURTHER DATA - Comment to existing data on Louis': you can not get fries at Louis'Lunch! You must know the rules before going, (1) do not talk until spoken to, (2) give your order clearly (3) never ask for ketchup! (4) Tell Louis if you want onion, tomato or a little of each.If you do not follow these rules, you will be ignored until the last person is served and that will be a long time. You have to have a lot of gumption to go to Louis' if you are a newcomer. Once they know you, you are a welcomed member to the Lassen family and you may even get a story of their history and of each brick in their establishment, which came from famous buildings all over the world.

The Coppell Deli, Coppell, TX USA Is certainly one of the best! In fact, John Madden frequents the Coppell Deli when he is in town to cover Dallas Cowboy Games. This "hole in the wall" is small and tucked away. This helps make it a favorite of Cowboy players, as well. You'll often see one of them picking up an order to go. The double-meat, double cheese, with bacon and grilled onions is definitely the way to go! I've just moved from Texas to Alabama and have yet to find anything that matches "The Deli."

A 100% Wyoming beef patty is topped with cheese, dipped in batter, frozen and then deep fried to order.
