My 4th g grandfather, Frederick Gray is the son of George Gray of Newberry County, SC, He was born about 1759 and died May 26, 1837 in Calhoun Falls, SC.
He was the only member of his family to be in favor of American independence. He enlisted in the South Carolina regulars in 1777 and served as a Private under Capt. John Lindsey and Col. Giles. He soon was elected to the rank of Captain and engagements at Alligator Bridge, Florida, and served under Col. Waters, Lindsey and Baird until close of the war.
After the war he served as a Representative in the South Carolina legislature.
Before his war service, in 1776, he married Chloretta ( Chloe ) Dawkins ( about 1740 - 1814 ). They had 10 children ( see Family Tree ). One of his sons was the Honorable Henry Gray ( grave location is unknown ), he served as a Captain in the War of 1812 and married Elvira Flanagan ( whose grave is in the Tench Cemetery in Coweta County, GA ) is my line.
Before 1814, Frederick married Mary Geddings (mother of Dr. Eli Geddings, distinguished physician and surgeon of Charleston), After his second marriage, he moved to Calhoun Falls, SC. Here he acquired a n estate called Gray's Mills ( later called Calhoun's Mills ). His estate later was known as John C. & Patrick Calhoun property.
Frederick Gray made will 24 November 1836, proven 2 October 1837 (Abbeville Probates 36-793, Record Book 2, p. 390)
He died May 26, 1837. His grave location was on Grays Hill overlooking the Savannah River. He requested burial at this particular place because it had been a Revolutionary War engagement in which he was part of, probably the Battle of Cherokee Ford. NOTE: I have been seeking the burial location of Frederick Gray for over 5 years now and have just recently found it. As was suspected his original grave location is now under Lake Richard B Russell, however, the grave was moved in a prefill ( of the lake ) relocation project. The "graveyard" was named Frederick Gray Cemetery by the movers since his was the only one of the six graves they found that was marked. The site was designated as 200-C-2. The graves were moved to the New Salem Cemetery ( N3407.759 W8235.515 ) which is about 2 miles N of the town of Calhoun Falls, SC, on SR 81. The cemetery plot for the 6 graves was purchased for $300 from the Trustees of the New Salem Cemetery.
