Franklin


   Thomas Alton Franklin, my grandfather ( my father's father ) was the son of Willis Craft  Franklin and Martha Anne Means ( the great granddaughter of Patriot John McMullen; he not only served in the Revolutionary War, but also was a tailor by trade and made General George Washington's first uniform when he became Commander of the Continental Army ) and  the grandson of William Pruit Franklin and Arminda Chandler.  He was born in Upson Co, GA, on November 17, 1887 and died March 8, 1967. He married Ida Boggs ( daughter of Brady Napoleon Boggs ).  She was born in Talbotton, GA, on March 21, 1893 and died May 4, 1979. They had six children - Alfred Alton ( my father ), Joseph Preston, Fredrick Boggs ( who served as a seaman on the ill fated warship, the USS Atlanta in WWII ), Percy Thomas ( Putt ), Martha Anne, and Wilmoth ( Sis ). They lived in Upson County in Thomaston, GA.

Thomas Alton was a miller and worked and lived by Reves old corn mill on Potato Creek in Thomaston, GA. He was an exceptional fisherman and hunter. Ida was a housewife.

My father was born in that old mill house, which was destroyed by fire years ago. I have great memories of fishing in that pristine millpond and stream and shooting .22 rifles in the water and woods.

They then moved to a house on Jeff Davis Road in Thomaston, GA, where they lived till they died ( above left ).

Alfred Alton Franklin ( known by all as  Andy ) graduated from R.E. Lee High School in Thomaston, GA, and the University of Georgia with a BA degree in Commerce. He also earned a LLD degree from Woodrow Wilson Law College in Atlanta, GA. He was a member of the Georgia Bar. Andy served in the US Army as a staff officer ( First Lt. ) for General George S Patton, Jr. He died September 23, 1987 at home in East Point, GA.

The burial flag from his funeral was donated to the  U.S. Military Cemetery at Andersonville, GA, to be flown of special occasions and holidays.

Martha Jeanette Franklin ( right ) graduated from the former Russell High School in East Point, GA, and earned a BS degree from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA. She worked as a diagnostic pathogenic microbiologist extraordinaire for the State of Georgia Public Health Department.

Alfred Alton Franklin married Martha Jeanette Linch on Dec 20, 1941. They lived on Linwood Ave. in East Point, GA. They had one son, Alfred Alton Franklin, Jr. ( born December 15, 1947 - pictured on right ). He married Melodie Ann Gaffney of Tampa, Florida on Jan 2, 1971 in Tampa, FL ). They had one son, Alfred Alton Franklin, III ( born January 20, 1972 )
